Laser Cutter Training

Page history last edited by Iain 8 years, 7 months ago

At Maker Space we'd like to keep our laser cutter in good condition and keep everyone safe so we have introduced a Laser Cutter Training Policy,

Training

Only Maker Space members are allowed to use the laser.  If you are a member then you can arrange a training session with one of the trainers listed on the Laser Cutter Users page.  The best way to do this is to either ask in person or ask on the North East Makers Google Group page.

The training session lasts up to an hour and cover the basic use of the machine.  We recommend that the training should be for one person at a time and ideally not during public sessions.  This gives you the best chance to get hands on experience with minimum interruption.

Ideally you should come to the training session with a design for something you'd like to cut, whether it's something you've downloaded or the masterpiece you've been working on for months.  Make sure you have exported it into the correct DXF format so the training can run smoothly.  We have some free software packages available such as Inkscape, DraftSight and LibreCAD so we might be able to help convert your files.  If you've used other software to create your design then it might be best to bring your laptop along with you just in case.

The Using The Laser Cutter page has more information on exporting files as well as the rest of the process so it's worth reading in advance of the training if you can.

Once you've had training, you will be added to the Laser Cutter Users page as having received training.

Supervised Use

Once you've had training, you will need to be supervised while you use the laser for the next few sessions.

Anyone who is listed as a fully trained operator on the Laser Cutter Users page can supervise you.  Try to arrange supervision in advance to find someone willing and free to help you.

Using the laser unsupervised

To use the laser unsupervised or supervise other new users, a Trainer must deem you to be competent.

There isn't a fixed number of times you need to use the laser before you are competent.   You just need to make a trainer feel that you are comfortable using the laser and remember to do essential things like switching the extractor fan on and entering your job times.

If a Trainer supervises you then they can see that you are competent.  Alternatively, if people who have supervised you vouch for you then a Trainer can choose to accept their word.

Once you are deemed competent, you will be added to the Fully Trained Operators list on the Laser Cutter Users page.

Becoming a Trainer

Anyone who is a Fully Trained Operator can volunteer to be a Trainer.  Ideally, you will have good experience with the laser as well.

If you're training for the first time, you should get another Trainer to attend the training session just in case you need any help or advice.  You and the other trainer should both be happy with the training session.  If this isn't the case, no problem, just get the trainer to come along next time until you're both comfortable.

When giving training you can use the Laser Cutter Training Checklist to make sure you don't miss anything out.
